The Watering Hole was painted in the Spring of 2022, during my very first paint-out with the Washington Society of Landscape Painters (WSLP). It was a gorgeous day in the sweet little town of Waterford, Virginia. All of the WSLP artists were scattered in and around town to "paint the town." I arrived a little nervous and proceeded to set my easel up on a shaky bank on the side of a road overlooking a bunch of cows drinking from a stream. I found myself just a few feet away from the cows and at eye-level! This turned out to be poor planning on my part because all of the cows, including the one in my painting, quickly walked away! Before his departure I was able to complete a quick paint sketch of the cow and finished it in-studio.
Painting outside in open air is a gift that feeds my soul. In essence, life is a watering hole. My hope for whoever ends up with this painting is that it will become a daily reminder and muse for health, faith and happiness in 2025 and beyond.
With love,
Amy
(Note: The WSLP is one of the oldest active art organizations in the greater Washington metropolitan area, tracing its origins to 1913! The group is limited to 40 artists at any given time, all who are juried into the group by its members. I became an official member in April, 2024, after painting as a sponsored guest of the talented Trisha Adams for two years! For more information about the WSLP visit www.wslp.org.
p.s. After the cow walked away, I turned my chair and proceeded to paint the tree-covered road instead and presented it at the lunchtime critique. It was well received. I called the painting "Until the Cows Come Home."
